Friday Five!!!!

Hay guyz!!

It's an awesome sunny day and the weekend is about to begin. Fuck yeah! It's supposed to be 91 this weekend, and I know I said I was gonna go to Baker Beach last weekend, but this weekend I really, truly mean it.

My top 5 ruling things of the day:

1. Rob Cockerham of Cockeyed.com fame linking to my shitty blog, causing my readership to go through the roof! Say hello cockeyed readers! And um sorry my blog sucks!

(A little background: Rob and I were roommates and awesome pals in Sacramento, dating back to 2001. He has a tremendously popular website, and has been featured on NPR and MTV. Brooke and I were featured in a lot of his pranks and incredibly scientific How Much Is Inside episodes. Click here here and here to see a few of them.)

2. BALDUR IS BACK at 651 Kansas! YAAAAYYYY

3. IT'S PRIDE WEEKEND! Bare-tittie lesbian parade, here I come!

4. Holding out hope that Neverland Ranch will be opened to the public and made into a museum, like Graceland. Also anticipating what will most likely be the most insanely circusy funeral of all time. They'd better be televising that shit. (RIP King of Pop, though. You did have some good-ass songs, I won't deny.)

5. Filming an audition vid for Jerry Springer with internet superstar Brendan Donnelly. It's going to be epic. There will be Nosferatu, hasids, a tranny played by Primo Pitino, and ripping off of wigs.

And as usual, my top 5 jamz of the week:

1. Michael Jackson - Human Nature

2. June Brides - In The Rain

3. The Shop Assistants - I Don't Wanna Be Friends With You

4. Cocteau Twins - Alice (for Matthew Bice)

5. Country Teasers - Golden Apples

RIP MJ

You will be missed. Tonight, I will pour out a glass of Jesus Juice in your honor.

My Affirmation for Today: Rad Stuff vs. Bullshit Stuff

During one of our epic "therapy through bitching" sessions a couple of weeks ago, Jessica and I came up with an idea. We decided to make make two lists on a piece of paper: a list of rad stuff and a list of bullshit stuff. We wrote everything we could think of that was currently ruling in our lives on one side, and the things that were sucking on the other, and tore the sheet in half. The rad lists were folded up and put into our wallets, and the bullshit lists were taken onto the balcony and set on fire. Sounds childish maybe, but it made us both feel so much better. Now whenever I'm feeling stressed out, I take the rad list out of my wallet and look it over, and visualize the offending bullshit things burning in front of me. Does that actually sound more than childish? Maybe psycho? I don't know...but if this sounds normal or even helpful to you I suggest you try it.

Here are my lists, obviously with certain personal things blacked out.

And here's Jessica tearing her bullshit list a new one.

For some reason I found myself pretty stressed out today. Happens occasionally...I had a mini panic attack while eating a sandwich in the mall food court (seriously) but then as it got later in the afternoon I started to feel a lot better. As I write this now, I'm feeling pretty good. A visit from my big brother Darrin and an awesome sushi dinner definitely helped.

Other things that make me feel like life is awesome:

HOT HAM N CHEESE videos on Youtube - fuck!!
Sunday afternoon record shopping
Bike rides through Golden Gate Park
Knockout photobooth sessions
The view from my balcony and bedroom window:

The new Oh Sees album
Animals wearing sunglasses
My mom's Michigan accent
Nutritional Yeast (sounds gross, tastes amazing on popcorn)
Party Down
Planning trips to LA and NYC this summer
Having really awesome, hilarious and fun friends
Pictures of Cimi dancing on the stage at Blowup

But then there's also still a lot of bullshit in the world:

Tuneless humming/whistling
Jeans with no back pockets (gross)
The fact that people still pay to see Mates of State
Old ladies shoving past me to get on the bus
Vintage shoes falling apart after being worn twice
Weight loss resulting in smaller boobs
Shitty afterparties
People over 30 dying their hair KrAzY kOlOrz
My cracked iPhone screen
Celery
Lettuce in hot food
Kanye West's fashion sense
Acid washed jeans
My allergies to fake gold and red wine
Having to dig around in my giant purse foreverrr to find my keys
Perez Hilton

I dunno...in the end I guess what I try to do is just try to keep the rad stuff in the wallet of my mind and imagine the bullshit stuff turning to ashes and floating away on the breeze. I guess that's how I stay optimistic? And also really fucking corny.

Friday Five!!

My top 5 things of the week, followed by my top 5 songs of the week:

1. Leti's in town til Tuesday ooOOooOooooOoooOOOOOo
2. Finally, awesome weather returns to SF. See you at Baker Beach, dickheads!
3. Dogsitting Scout next weekend while Michael's in LA
4. My new ring that I had personally engraved outside the mall a couple of days ago. Despite writing my name on a piece of paper for the little dude who made it, the ring still says "MELENIE." I kinda like it better that way.
5. The Sean O'Shadezzz...SF's sloppiest almost-band, featuring me, Jess B, Sean O'Shea and Corey C.

Onto the tunez...

1. The Primitives - Really Stupid (Sorry, I could only find a live version)

2. PIL - Rise (Yeah, PIL two weeks in a row...Patty and I were driving around last weekend and this came on the radio and we did our best John Lydon beats along to it)

3. Adam And The Ants - Xerox

4. Kleenex - You/U (For my cute lil homofriend Michael, who always plays Kleenex we dj togeths)

5. Brilliant Colors - Come Back Maggie (One of my very fave bands in SF right now! Sorry for the shitty-quality live video)

HAVE A GOOD WEEKEND GUYZ!!!!

My Weekend In Shitty Camera Phone Pictures

SATURDAY

There's a liquor store on Hayes Street where a 10-year old girl and her little brother make the most amazing paintings on little blocks of wood and sell them for $5. I picked one up for myself - a donkey playing soccer. There are crude speech bubbles above the donkey and the soccer ball.

Donkey: GOOOAALLLL
Soccer Ball: Yeah Right

Had brunch with Patty, Jesse and Daniel at Flippers. Did you know they serve brunch? It's not that good, but they have a pretty sweet courtyard and the food is pretty cheap. Not a bad way to spend a Saturday afternoon.

Erin texted and said Papercuts were playing a free show at Amoeba. They sounded amazing, and I picked up the last record on vin-yul and got a free poster. I think I'm too old to have band posters up on my wall (except for my omg totally limited edition screen-printed Orange Juice Poster), but it was a win anyway.

After Amoeba, Erin and I wandered around Haight Street. Upon exiting Wasteland, we were greeted with the sight of 25 or so nude middle-aged men bicycle riding for peace, their soggy old sacs swaying in the breeze. Some of them had half-ons and it made us feel weird to our very cores.

But hey, if this ends a war somewhere I guess my eyes burning for a few short seconds is a small price to pay.

We went to Piedmont, a drag queen/stripper/raver store, and I bought some amazing earrings. I was tempted to buy these rhinestone pins as well, but they were $25!!

Although, the "OH SHIT" one might actually be worth the money.

Later I went home and admired my new purchases. New records always make me super happy. (Um come see me play them at Casanova this Wednesday night with cutie pie Michael Aguilar. End plug.)

New (used) shoes from Wasteland! They're dEzInEr!!!1

SUNDAY

Went to brunch at Andalu, which gets worse every time I eat there. Walked to Jessica's house to help her load her drums into her station wagon so we could take them to our AWESOME BAND'S practice space. Spotted this on a telephone pole. It reads "Her stove, and put out her food in tins."

Outside a liquor store on 23rd St. For some reason this made me happy.

I teased Jessica about her bumper sticker.

There were a couple of old copies of Seattle alternative weekly "The Stranger" in the practice space. The back cover featured this call for people with ass herpes.

We wrote a new song! It sounds like this:

Oops, kinda lost steam after a minute.

Had dinner with Jessica and Sean after practice at We Be Sushi. (The good one near 22nd, not the gross one near 16th). The artwork on the bathroom walls is kind of mind-blowing.

Finally hooked up my turntable and listened to the Beets record I bought at Aquarius. It's ok.

Capped off an awesome weekend by watching "Coming To America." Success!!!

Hi Jessica
